Start and end in Playa Las Canas! With the volunteer/community tour Dominican Republic – Heart & Soul of the Caribbean, you have a 8 day tour package taking you through Playa Las Canas, Dominican Republic. Dominican Republic – Heart & Soul of the Caribbean includes accommodation as well as an expert guide, meals, transport and more.

Tour Itinerary

Schools, medical clinics, and houses are being constructed in the Dominican Republic out of reusable plastic bottles. We’ll work with local people, including Haitian migrant communities, to create more of these structures, which help rid the area of waste and teach environmental awareness. Most importantly, they provide a much-needed resource, with many of these rural communities lacking basic infrastructure. To achieve our purpose, lay cement foundations, stack bottles and secure around the walls, or construct a roof – you pick up where the last group left off, so your tasks differ depending on time of travel.

DAY 1: Arrive in the Dominican Republic and Meet the Group

Upon arrival at the airport in either Puerto Plata or Santiago, you’ll be met by a member of our staff and taken to the lodge. After sampling Dominican cuisine at a welcome dinner, we will discuss the schedule for the week and our staff will give you an overview of the volunteer project.

DAY 2: Visit a Bottle Home Project in Cano Dulce

This morning we’ll travel to our first project, a bottle home in the nearby community of Cano Dulce. Besides cleaning the community of waste, these buildings teach environmental awareness, open the community to new building techniques and provide a sense of ownership. After dinner, we’ll have a discussion on the seven elements of human security in the Dominican Republic.

DAY 3: Continue Our Time with the Bottle Project

After breakfast we’ll return to the bottle project, continuing our efforts to add the bottles into the foundation of the structure and beginning to put the finishing touches on the project, such as laying the concrete. In the afternoon we’ll enjoy some free time near the lodge, at the beach or by the pool. We’ll have dinner together and enjoy a talk about Haitian- Dominican relations on the island.

DAY 4: Relax in Beautiful Dudu Ecological Park

Today we’ll enjoy a day of relaxation at the Dudu Ecological Park, a beautiful nature reserve based around a large freshwater lagoon. Explore the park’s nature trails and laze in the Caribbean sun, then cool off with a dip in the lagoon. In the afternoon we’ll stop by Playa Grande, a beautiful Caribbean beach with crystal blue waters.

DAY 5: Visit a Haitian Community and Help to Build a School

After breakfast we’ll visit the Haitian-Dominican community of La Grua, where we’ll help with the construction of a school. La Grua is a batey, a community of Haitians who were displaced to the Dominican Republic, many of whom were born here but are not recognized or given help by the government. Travelers will also be exposed to the 7 Elements of Human Security and also have an opportunity to see environmental destruction from tree cutting for coal.

DAY 6: Return to Volunteer at the Bottle Project

After breakfast, we’ll continue our projects with the bottle house in the coastal town of Caño Dulce. This is a special project for us as it is close to the location of our lodge and the members of this community are very close to our team on the ground. Later in the afternoon, we’ll relax at the lodge and have a chat about community health issues in the Dominican Republic and Haiti.

DAY 7: Take a Snorkel Trip and Enjoy a Farewell Dinner

Today we’ll relax on the beach and browse the boutiques in Cabarete, before visiting the coastal town of Sosúa, where we’ll enjoy a snorkeling excursion. Enjoy the spectacular views over the ocean and coastline before we stop at a calm bay to swim and snorkel over beautiful coral reefs. Tonight we’ll enjoy a farewell dinner together and reflect on our experiences over the last week.

DAY 8: Return Home

Today sadly sees the end of our adventure. After breakfast and final goodbyes, we’ll travel to Puerto Plata or Santiago to board our flights home.
